Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee of the State Bar of Michigan - Face of Justice Banner

The State Bar of Michigan Face of Justice program is a pathway to the legal profession effort aimed at students, to give them an opportunity to meet with legal professionals in face-to-face “jet-mentoring” sessions. We are planning for two programs in September and we invite you to join us as a mentor for the students.

We aim to expose these students to the multiplicity of paths they might explore as careers and connect them to a community we are building for the program. Your contribution of time and expertise will be meaningful to these students as they pursue their professional goals.

Sign up here to join us.

Pathways into law and other justice system careers are more important now than ever, we hope you can join us for these opportunities, if you cannot, please watch for upcoming opportunities with Oakland Community College in October and Wayne State Law School in November.

Learn and hear how AI was used to create a recording of the oral arguments in the landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

Every attorney knows the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board, but did you know that the oral argument was never recorded? The Supreme Court did not install a recording system to capture the history of arguments before our nation’s highest court until 1955. Seventy years later, using powerful new artificial intelligence technology, recordings of the lawyers and justices, and oral argument transcripts, the team at Oyez (Cornell University’s Legal Information Institute, Justia, and Chicago-Kent College of Law) created an audio version of the oral arguments in the landmark school desegregation case.

The West Michigan Chapter of the FBA is excited to announce that Northwestern University Professor Emeritus Jerry Goldman, who helped create Brown’s oral arguments, will tell us the backstory of this educational project and offer his analysis and commentary on how AI was used to create the arguments, the ethical and legal issues involved, the criticisms of using AI in this manner, and possible future AI projects at Oyez. This is only the second time that an audio recording of the oral arguments will be heard in a U.S. courthouse!

The presentation takes place on Thursday, April 24 at noon in the jury assembly room (second floor) of the Grand Rapids federal courthouse. A Zoom option will be available and sent out as it gets closer to the program, but this unique event is best experienced and enjoyed in person. Please join us for this incredible event.

Please RSVP to Melissa Rabidoux at Melissa_Rabidoux@fd.org by April 18th If you would like to order a lunch for $15.
