Local Attorney Recognized as Honored Alumna

Tuesday, November 20, 2018

Deborah Bennett Berecz was recently named an honored alumna and awarded the Andrews University Alumni Association Medallion by the university’s president at a banquet in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Nominated by fellow alumni, the Medallion was presented to Bennett Berecz on the basis of unusual achievement in a profession or occupation.

“I’m moved and grateful to have been selected as an honored alumna and look forward to continuing to improve legal services for families experiencing the deeply human challenge of divorce,” Deborah responded when notified of the award.

Bennett Berecz, a 1988 graduate of the university, and a 1993 graduate of Notre Dame Law School, practices family law in St. Joseph, Michigan and in the greater Grand Rapids area. She has been a leader in the movement to change the way families experience divorce in Michigan. Deborah determined early in her career that families needed something different from the legal system that handles criminal and civil disputes. She spent hours working with local judges and attorneys, served as chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (“ADR”) Section and as president of the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan. Today, early mediation is ordered by the court in virtually every case involving children. Family lawyers now typically move into problem-solving through mediation rather than putting families through multiple court hearings and depositions, saving those processes for cases where they are truly needed. In addition, Collaborative Law is now strongly established in the State of Michigan and continues to grow nationally, offering divorcing families an opportunity to begin healing during the painful process of divorce.
