The Impact of Diversity, Immigration, and Migrant Labor on Real Estate and the Environment

A Donde Vamos?

Speaker: Teresa Hendricks, Director of Migrant Legal Aid

Michigan is an agricultural-dependent state, vulnerable to national policies that could affect our food, water, land, and labor.  What does this mean for real estate and the environment?  Plenty. 50 years since the Fair Housing Act, the face of the real estate industry has changed.  Immigrants and migrant workers (documented and undocumented) are not only harvesting our food but have become woven into the very thread of our communities.  This increasingly diverse pool of home buyers and laborers seeks the right to own, use and transfer private property and work safely, free from environmental hazards.  Unsuspecting farmworkers and their families can become entangled in real estate transactions and environmental issues in ways never before seen. Teresa Hendricks, Director of Migrant Legal Aid, a Grand Rapids civil legal aid office for migrant workers, will lead an eye-opening discussion of things you should know: The far-reaching ramifications and opportunities presented by our changing landscape.
