About the Young Lawyers Section
The Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the Grand Rapids Bar Association is a society of attorneys that are either younger than 36 years of age or have been practicing in the Grand Rapids area for less than five years.
BenefitsThis section provides an opportunity to befriend and work with fellow new members of the bar, engage in social and networking functions, hear distinguished speakers from local business and legal communities, understand the inner workings of our Bar association, and give back to the legal, professional, and local communities.
The YLS board consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chair, Community Outreach Chair, and others the board considers appropriate for a given year. At the last meeting of the year, which usually happens in May, the YLS as a whole nominates new members for each board position, nominees make the case for their election, and members vote.
Meetings and EventsEach month, YLS plans a monthly meeting and a monthly event. The monthly meeting features lunch and often a speaker, with an opportunity for socializing. The monthly event addresses the social, educational, or community concerns of members. In the past, social events have included a hockey game, a poker night, a barbecue and bowling. Educational events have also encompassed a new lawyer's orientation, roundtable panel discussions and swearing-in ceremonies for new attorneys. Community events have included working with Habitat for Humanity, gathering donations for various charities, and participating in tutoring and mentoring programs.

Volunteer Opportunities For Anyone
GRAND RAPIDS URBAN LEAGUE - Tenant Law
Held every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month after business hours. This is a volunteer event that needs attorneys who are familiar with the landlord/tenant laws in Michigan to help troubled tenants, and sometimes landlords. You have the option to take the case and the clients are sometimes able to pay.
JUBILEE JOBS - Collateral Consequences
Held every 4th Saturday of the month. This workshop provides the opportunity for individuals to address collateral consequences from being on the Central Registry or prior criminal records.
If you are interested in either of these events please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. These events are rewarding and provide valuable time for you to counsel real clients. You are no obligated to take cases in any regard but may do so if you wish.
