Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS)


Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) is seeking pro bono attorneys to help increase legal assistance to low income Native American communities in Michigan. Among Michigan's Native American communities, especially those located in rural areas of the state, the percentage of individuals living below the poverty level is generally much higher than the state overall. Poverty and scarce legal resources contribute to a significantly greater need for effective legal counsel. You can be a part of the solution by volunteering as a pro bono attorney with MILS. MILS has a pro bono opportunity to fit your schedule, your location, and your practice area. You can volunteer as a pro bono volunteer to:
•    Provide community legal education presentations to rural Native American communities in Michigan,
•    Provide mentoring or case consultation to MILS staff attorneys in your area of expertise, and
•    Directly represent MILS clients.

POSITION: Indigent Defense Administrator Attorney


The successful candidate, under general direction of County Administration is responsible for operating the County’s indigent criminal defense program, ensuring that adult defendants receive competent legal representation in criminal proceedings. This position oversees the screening, selection and maintenance of a roster of eligible attorneys for case assignment, evaluates attorney performance, authorizes investigative and expert resources, authorizes payments, sets a budget, acts as the grant administrator for the County including reporting, and performs other duties related to providing competent legal advice and counsel.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains responsibility for directing day-to-day operation including workload of personnel, evaluations of performance and assuring training and professional development is addressed.
  • Oversees indigency eligibility screening for assigned counsel based on appropriate standards.
  • Develops, updates and administers policies and procedures to ensure that all legal practices and procedure conform to the substantive and procedural requirements of the Michigan Court Rules, State Court Administrator’s Office, American Bar Association, Canon of Professional Ethics and all other statutory, case law and professional standards of legal practice.
  • Identifies attorneys that are qualified to accept appointments. Ensures interested attorneys meet MIDC standards.
  • Maintains a roster of qualified attorneys, makes case assignments, and oversees scheduling of counsel.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctorate or Bachelor of Law Degree combined with five years of progressively responsible and demonstrably successful experience.

Must be a member in good standing of the State of Michigan Bar Association.

Thorough working knowledge of the Michigan criminal and civil codes, statutes affecting municipalities, appellate law, and case law as well as Michigan Court Rules, SCAO requirements and other rules and regulations with respect to Court procedures and process is required.

Ability to interact positively and professionally with judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, officers of the Court and members of the general public from widely divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds is essential.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the judiciary by researching legal resources for precedents and opinions with respect to legal issues and points of law for the preparation of decisions and/or legal opinions. This individual will prepare citations to support judicial opinions and decisions and draft opinions and decisions as directed by the judiciary. Other duties will include filing documents for Court actions, performing related work to expedite litigation of civil, criminal and family law matters and various duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Effective communication skills, both oral and written, and a thorough working knowledge of brief preparation are essential.

Job Responsibilities

This professional position exercises all legal powers granted to a probate register in uncontested matters and is the primary resource for information to petitioners, attorneys, heirs, caseworkers, guardians, conservators and other parties to the matters before the Court. As directed by the Chief Probate Judge, the successful candidate will manage the day-to-day operations of the Court ensuring that all functions of the Court comply with state law and with the State Court Administrator’s Office rules, standards and requirements. The position ensures that all staff are properly trained and will develop and administer operating, capital and personnel budgets to ensure cost efficient services. Subject to the approval of the Chief Probate Judge, this position establishes, modifies, updates and implements Court operating policies and procedures. The position also oversees the Kent County Guardianship Program.

Job Requirements

The position requires a Juris Doctorate or LL.B., combined with a minimum of four years’ progressively responsible experience in the management of legal or judicial services. Membership in the State Bar of Michigan is required.
