Congratulations on your successful completion of the Michigan Bar Examination! If you are planning to participate in the Grand Rapids Bar Association’s ceremony for admission to practice, please read the following carefully & completely:
Letters with information about our ceremony were mailed on Tuesday, October 30, 2012. If you do not receive a packet by Monday, November 5, and would like to be included in our ceremony, please contact us at 616-454-5550 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our admissions ceremony provides the opportunity to be admitted to both the state and federal courts (US District Court, Western District of Michigan). Admission to the federal court is optional, however, because it can prove challenging to schedule an individual swearing in with a federal judge, you may want to take advantage of this opportunity.
You will need a sponsor (a lawyer that is licensed to practice in Michigan) to move for your admission. If you wish to be admitted to the U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan, your sponsor must also be admitted to practice in that court. Your sponsor must be admitted to all courts to which you are being admitted, you cannot have two sponsors. If you do not have a sponsor the Bar Association can provide one for you- sponsors provided by the GRBA will be able to move for admission to both courts.
In order to participate in our Admission Ceremony we MUST receive the following from you NO LATER THAN 5:00pm on November 14, 2012:
- The correct spelling of your name as you want it to appear on your Certificate of Admission
- The name of your sponsor (if you do not have one, please indicate “I need a sponsor” when submitting your materials and payments)
- The ORIGINAL notice you received from the Board of Examiners (this is the notice that begins “Greetings from the Court”). You may wish to make a copy for your records.
- A check in the amount of $25.00 made payable to the Kent County Clerk
- A check in the amount of $200.00 made payable to the U.S. District Court (if you choose to be admitted to federal court)
You must complete the “Petition for Admission” from (included in your packet from the GRBA) and BRING IT WITH YOU to the ceremony. DO NOT send us your Petition for Admission. (Leave the section requesting your P# blank – this information will be provided to you by the State Bar after your admission to practice.)
If we do not hear from you by November 14, you will be unable to participate in our Admissions Ceremony.
