GRBA Volunteer Opportunities for Attorneys

Committees

The Grand Rapids Bar Association always welcomes its Members to assist the Association by serving on one of its standing committees. Call the Executive Director, Kim Coleman, if you are interested in serving on one of the committees by dialing 616-454-5550. Full list of standing committees.

Speakers Bureau

The Grand Rapids Bar Association receives numerous requests for lecturers and writers. Volunteers may be asked to speak at section meetings, public and private schools, retirement communities and other community organizations. Writers may be asked to write articles on a law-related subject for a newsletter or other publication. If you would like to join the Speaker's Bureau, please fill out the Speaker s Bureau Registration form.

Constitution Day Program

Each September, the GRBA partners with the Grand Rapids Public Schools to provide special lessons on the U.S. Constitution to area students. The program's goal is to match the district's fifth grade classrooms with one attorney, who provides one hour of interactive instruction.

Volunteers will be provided with a Volunteer Packet and copies of the Constitution for each of the students in their class. During the one-hour class period, the volunteer may focus on any aspect of the Constitution.

For more information, call the Bar office at 616-454-5550.

Ask-the-Lawyer

In partnership with the Grand Rapids Public Library, the Grand Rapids Bar Association presents a series of 2-hour sessions, each focused on one area of the law. Topics include Child Custody & Support, Landlord-Tenant Disputes, Bankruptcy, and others. Attorneys are asked to provide a brief overview of the topic and then answer questions from members of the public. Sessions take place in the evenings at the Grand Rapids Public Library's downtown branch.

3Rs Program

Modeled after the Cleveland Bar Association, the Grand Rapids Bar Association is partnering with the Grand Rapids Public Schools to present an innovative Civics Education Program to all Freshmen Social Studies Students at Ottawa Hills High School. The 3Rs Program provides education regarding Rights, Responsibilities, and Realities and is designed to address fundamental issues facing the students and, ultimately, our city and region. Learn more about the 3Rs Program.

Special Events

Volunteers are needed on an occasional basis to help with special fundraising events for the Justice Foundation of West Michigan, the Grand Rapids Bar Association's charitable giving branch.

Legal Assistance Programs

The Legal Assistance Center and  Legal Aid of Western Michigan are organizations that help people in the community get the legal assistance they need. Both organizations would be happy to have an attorney, judge, or law student help out for as much or as little time as an individual has to spare. More information.
